Bishop Given opened the retreat with a devotion from Nehemia chapter 4: 1-6, encouraging the Pastors and their wives to expect opposition when they live and minister in their parishes. The one to overcome this is God Himself and our trust in him. Rev. Dr. Derek Tovey from New Zealand led two studies at the retreat. They were from John’s Gospel, looking at the Mission of Jesus and the lessons we can learn from his approach to people we met. We were challenged to follow his example of reaching out to those who were not the most attractive or acceptable but needed spiritual help. Derek travelled with his wife, Leah, and she spoke briefly too, especially to the pastors’ wives.
