Community development
Wekense is one of seventeen parishes in the Diocese taking part in the Church and Community Mobilization Programme (CCMP). The CCMP is a Bible-based, guided training approach that local churches are using with their communitied to identify the resources they have, then work together to bring about long-lasting, whole-life change. As local communities work through the process, they decide which activities will bring about the most effective and positive outcomes for them given their current situations.
Three savings and credit groups have been formed: Faraja, Mshikamano and Upendo-Mbarad. These groups have enabled many people in the community to form small business enterprises. They are selling their goods at the large weekly market and in local shops, contributing to improve livelihoods.
The church, in collaboration with local government, has planted a variety of trees near the village office - this so impressed the ward officer, that he sent congratulations to Bishop Given for the churces contribution to environmental conservation.
Training in climate-smart agricultural methods has motivated the village community to plant their fields using improved farming methods and diversifying their crops. They have planted maize, ground nuts, millet, sunflowers and other crops and this has improved the local economic situation. At parish level, church members have cultivated two acres of cassava and ground nuts and engaged in other small-scale agricultural projects, such as cultivating sunflowers and vegetables.
There are four savings and credit groups - Amani A, Amani B, Masimba and Upendo. Group members are saving money together, to invest in agricultural and livestock projects and to start small business enterprises.
