The school is located next to the new Kondoa, St. Paul’s Cathedral (under construction), on the main road into Kondoa Town. Following the Government Registration in early 2020, it is expected that the existing thirty pupils will expand three times to between ninety and one hundred children during 2021.
The Project started with the boundary fence, brickmaking and the construction of the classroom walls. The buildings were sufficiently advanced for the formal Foundation Stone Ceremony on August 11th, 2016: conducted by Bishop GIven and Bishop James Langstaff from Rochester Diocese, UK.
The School was officially opened by the District Commissioner of Chemba, Simon Odunga, on 14 October 2018. Lessons for the initial thirty pupils commencing in early 2019. The School now consists of six classrooms, an Administration Block, a Head-Teachers’ House and an unfinished dormitory block.
Three of the four teachers are English-speaking: Head-Teacher Conjester (nee) Benjamin, Teachers Careem and Emabrenda; and the original Swahili Teacher, Melina. The School has a strong Christian ethos, however, it is open to pupils of all faiths and none, and children from both rich and poor backgrounds.
Unfortunately, the difficulties caused for many families by the global COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on planned growth in pupil numbers. An appeal has been launched to provide half the School Fee for each child in 2021. With a target of sixty Standard One Primary and thirty Pre-Primary pupils – a total of ninety children – some £13,500 (~US$18,000) is sought. Happily, with the generous help of supporters in the two companion Diocese of Rochester (UK) and East Tennessee (US) and New Zealand most of this money has been raised.
We thank God for all who have supported this Project and pray that the School will continue to grow and prosper as it reaches out with a Christian message into Kondoa Town and the surrounding community.
