Community development.
Soya is one of seventeen parishes that has taken part in the Church and Community Mobilization Programme. As local communities work through the training process, they decide which activities will bring about the most effective and positive outcomes for them given their current situations. It is organised by the Department if Development and funded by St James Church in the Diocese of Rochester, UK.
The CCMP in Soya has had a significant impact on the church and community, since they started the three-year programme in 2023. New members have joined the church, and a larger number of Christians attend Sunday services. This growth in attendance has also led to an increase in church giving.
Christian education is now being offered in the local primary and secondary schools, which has attracted more young people and teachers to the church and the number of students performing well in their final exams has increased too.
Four savings and credit groups have been formed - Faraja, Mshikamano, Upendo and Mbarad. These groups are enabling many people to form small business enterprises. They sell their goods at the large weekly local market and in local shops, contributing to improved livelihoods.
Examples of CCMP business enterprises are shown below, - a successful market stall, a restaurant and a tailoring business.
