Women's Empowerment Project
The Women's Empowerment Project is run by the Mother’s Union.
Students can choose to study literacy skills or sewing. Alongside this they are given lessons on health, nutrition, parenting skills, Christian marriage and business skills in order to equip them for life.
The Project has evolved greatly since it began in 2013 and we are constantly looking to improve the teaching we provide, so that the project has the greatest benefit for the participants. The project provides courses of three months for women in the Diocese and occasionally includes men who wish to learn literacy skills.
This project was at first funded by a generous donor in the Rochester Diocese and is now mainly funded by the Mothers Union. We are delighted to announce new funding from UTO (please see below).
Rev'd Lilian Gaula, chair of the Mothers Union in Kondoa, recently led a team visit to Bunda, where they were inspired and informed about how to establish a commercial enterprise, including a sewing school and other ventures. They were pleased to welcome a return visit from Bunda in June 2017.
Lilian said: "We wish one day if Gods will we will have an independent center for our girls like that. It was a blessing safari. Last month we got visitors from GB Bunda as well, it was for return visit, how a blessing it was!!!"
Students receive their certificates from Rev'd Lilian Gaula, Chair of the Mothers' Union.
September 2023 funding update
We are deeply grateful to the
United Thank Offering (UTO) for a grant of USD $ 54,955.
This grant will allow us to renovate the sewing classroom, purchase new sewing machines and tools/accessories and cover the costs of three month sewing courses for one year.
