Hunger appeal January 2026

One of our companionship link Dioceses, the Diocese of Rochester UK has launched a fund raising appeal for our pastors at this time of hunger.  Our neighbouring Diocese of Mpwapwa is similarly being supported by Rochester as they are linked as well.  The text of the appeal is below:

Rochester’s Companion Dioceses of Kondoa and Mpwapwa in Tanzania are experiencing a serious food crisis after last year's rains came too late for the maize crop which had started to grow and then simply dried up.  Maize is the staple food for people in these communities and while they have been able to grow some other crops, without maize there is already great hunger, which will only increase during this month, February and March as they wait for the next harvest expected in April this year.  Sadly they are expecting a poor harvest again this year due to the rains arriving at Christmas, two months late.
Bishops Given and Luzineth have asked if we can help with feeding the pastors and their families.

We urgently appeal for your support through this Hunger Appeal. Your generosity can make a real and immediate difference.  A gift of £40 will buy a 100kg bag of maize, helping to sustain a family during this difficult period. By giving, you can help provide food, restore hope, and stand in solidarity with the people of Kondoa as they face this crisis together.

The Appeal will remain open, although we do invite donations to be made by 31 January if possible, so we can send the funds out to provide hope and blessings to our Companion Diocese early in February.

Donations may be made either:

All donations received in response to this Appeal will go to support Kondoa's pastors, and where the need is greatest.  Should we be in the wonderful position of raising more funds than is needed for the pastors, Bishop Given will use those funds as he thinks best to feed the poor.
